K9 Spotlight: Kristen Berry and Benji (Part 1 of 2)

"It happens for many mothers. We lose our way on the path of life when our children grow up and leave the house. I'd lost my way alright, and it felt like a haphazard series of "trial and error" for me to find a meaningful purpose that stacked up as well as "mom in demand".

One day, that all changed when I received a special request from our son who is a US Air Force pilot. He needed us to take care of very young Belgian Malinois for an extended period of time. My husband and I were all too happy to step up to the task, especially me, as I had promised our son this I would give it my best with his canine "Benji" should the need ever arise.

I had no knowledge about working dogs at the time, let alone what it would take to train a Belgian Malinois, but I kept my promise and I trained Benji to advanced obedience. It changed my life. There is an indescribable sense of accomplishment and commitment in training a working dog. When the time came to reunite Benji with our son, it was bittersweet, but I was so very proud for seeing it through. It had been my duty to son, country, (and canine)! And... I'd completed it beyond what I, or anyone else, had expected.

With our son and Benji stationed halfway across the country, our house became very quiet again without a Belgian Malinois running around. I couldn't imagine not having another Malinois to train. After some very careful consideration and research, we got a Mal puppy and aptly named him "Pilot".”
